50 things you need to know about Down Under (Australia)

 

 

What is typical Australian? Especially the amazing nature, but also the very nice people and cities. I will show you 50 funny and interesting things that make this huge country so special to me and I know you will love them too. Well most of them at least.

 1. Koalas You will only find them in Australia. They sleep about 20 hours a day and mostly hang in the trees. Koalas only eat one special eucalyptus.
 2. Kangaroos The kangaroo is one the national symbols Australia's. There live more kangaroos in Australia than people. Sadly they also eat their meat and even export it.
 3. the coast Australia's coast is a crazy 35.876 km long and is so diverse as nowhere else in the world. From steep cliffs to paradise-like beach - Australia has it all.
 4. perfect surfspots Where there is a lot of coastline there are heaps of great surfspots.
 5. roadsigns There are so many roadsigns for all kinds of animals and typ of streets.
 6. Kookaburras This bird always laughs at you. Well at least the tweeting from the only in Australia living bird seems like it.
 7. dangerous animals In Australia there live the ten most dangerous snake and spiders in the world. But don't worry, there is just a very small risk you will meet one of them.
 8. backpackers Backpackers are something like the second Australians and are always broke. ;-) Especially Germans love traveling trough Down Under, but also other nations do of course.
 9. impressive cities Next to the amazing nature, Australia has impressive cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane or Adelaide to offer.
 10. Tim Tams Tim Tams are extremely delicious chocolate biscuits that will make you addicted. A Tim Tam consists out of two biscuits, covered in finest, melted chocolate and a creamy filling...mmmh! You need to try it!  11. the outback About 3/4 of Australia consists of the outback, which are regions far away from civilized regions.
 12. thousands of sights like the 12 Apostles, Whitehaven Beach, Pinnacles, Fraser Island, Great Barrier Reef ...
 13. Aborigines Aborigines are the first people who settled in Australia. 50.000 years ago! With that they are the oldest still existing culture in the world.
 14. Digeridoos and Boomerangs
 15. national parks In Australia there are heaps of great national parks, like Karijini and Kalbarri national park.
 16. long straight roads 400 km distance is like a stone's throw for the Australians. You often drive long and especially straight roads.
 17. BBQ Barbecue is kind of holy for the Australians. That is why everywhere in the country there are these free BBQ spots.
 18. roadtrains Roadtrains are trucks with at least 2 trailers.
 19. sparsely populated Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. But there only live about 22.8 million people.  20. live is romping at the coast About 85% of all Australians live not more than 60km away from the coast. So the inner parts of the country is mostly not populated.
 21. isolated city Perth is one of the most isolated cities in the world. With 1.5 million inhabitants Perth has 80% of the Western Australian population. The next city with 100.000 inhabitants is Adelaide which is about 1,200km away.
 22. In the Australian Alps in more snow than in the Swiss Alps.
 23. Since 1979 no one in Australia died from a spider bite.  24. Australian's use heaps of appreciation, like breakkie, bicci, barbie, sunny, comfy...  25. In 1859 24 rabbits were released in Australia. In only ten years the population grew up to 2 million animals.
 26. Platypus' are poisonous.
 27. A mountain in Australia is called „Mount Disappointment“. Mountain climber, who climbed the mountain, they did not think the view was really worth it and wanted to express this fact.
 28. The biggest cow-ranch in the world is in Australia. She is called „Anna Creek Station“ and has a size of 23.677 km².
 29. You could enjoy 27 years long a new beach everyday without going to the same place twice. 30. No one of the local Australian animals has got hoofs. 31. Harold Holt, the former premier minister of Australia, went to the beach in 1967 – he was never seen again. 32. A man from the Iraq moved to Australia and needed to live from government support. When he became rich himself, he gave the Australian government a check with the amount of money that he had received. 33. In Victoria only trained electricians are allowed to change a light bulb. 34. An Australian citizen once tried to sell New Zealand at Ebay. The Island would have been a real bargain – with 22 bidder the offer was at exactly 3.000 $ at the end.
 35. The deadliest animal in Australia is a jellyfish. Chiropsalmus quadrigatus or also Box Jellyfish killed more people than all deadly animals together!
 36. A river in Australia is called the „Never Never River“. 37. In 1954 Bob Hawke did put up a new record in beer drinking – he drank 2.5 pints in 11 seconds. 29 years later he became the premier minister of Australia. Cheers! 38. Camels are a plague in Central Australia. There are about 1 million of them. Australia has one of the biggest wild living camel population in the world – they are even exported to Saudi-Arabia. There are ten times as many camels than koalas. 39. From 1828 to 1902 it was forbidden to swim at the beach at daylight. 40. Perth has the biggest density of cafés in the world. 41. In Australia live 3,3 times more sheep than people. 42. Tasmania has the clearest air in the world. 43. At the beginning Australia was used as penal colony from the Britons and criminals were shipped here. The first Police unit of the country consisted out of inmates, who behaved the best.
 44. 80% of the in Australia living animals can not be found anywhere else in the world.
 45. In Melbourne lives the biggest Greek population outside of Greek. 46. The „Dingo Fence“ is the longest fence in the world. It is 5.613,39 km long and – as its name already says – is used to prevent unwelcomed visits by Dingos. 47. Australia is as wide as the distance from Moscow to London. 48. Kangaroos and emus cannot walk backwards. 49. When Melbourne and Sydney could not agree who of them should become the capital of the country. They found a new city as a compromise – Canberra. 50. In 1940 two airplanes collided over New South Wales. But instead of crashing they became entangled and landed together.
